What would you do if your pet got hurt?

Many pet owners are not sure. Knowing pet first aid can help you act fast in an emergency. It can keep small problems from getting worse.

You don’t need to be a vet to help. You just need to learn a few key skills. These can make a big difference in your pet’s health and safety. Being ready means your pet gets the care it needs right away.

Let’s look at the most important first aid skills for pet owners.

Check Breathing and Pulse

When your pet is not acting normal, check for breathing first. Watch the chest to see if it rises and falls. You can also place your hand near your nose to feel for air.

If you don’t see movement, act fast. Try calling your pet’s name or gently touching them. If they don’t respond, they may not be breathing well.

To check the pulse, place two fingers on the inside of the back leg. You can also feel near the chest where the heart is. A weak or fast pulse can mean trouble.

Stop Bleeding Quickly

If your pet has a cut or injury, stay calm and act fast. Use clean gauze or a towel to press on the area. This helps stop the bleeding and keeps dirt out.

Hold the pressure for a few minutes without letting go. If the blood soaks through, place a new layer on top. Do not take the first one off, as that can make it worse.

Treat Burns Carefully

Burns can happen from hot water, fire, or even the sun. If your pet gets burned, run cool water over the area right away. Do this for several minutes to help ease the pain.

Never use ice or butter on a burn. These can make it worse. Gently pat the area dry with a clean cloth.

Cover the burn with a soft, dry bandage if you have one. Try to keep your pet calm and quiet. Then take them to the vet as soon as you can.

Handle Choking Safely

If your pet is coughing, drooling, or pawing at the mouth, they may be choking. First, try to look inside their mouth. If you see something, gently try to remove it with your fingers.

If you can’t see the object or your pet won’t let you near it, don’t force it. Try giving gentle back blows between the shoulder blades to loosen the object.

Know CPR for Pets

Pet CPR can save your pet’s life if they stop breathing or don’t have a heartbeat. First, lay your pet on its right side. Check for breathing and a heartbeat for 10 seconds.

If there’s no sign of life, start CPR. Give 30 chest presses at a steady beat. Then give two rescue breaths by sealing your mouth over their nose. Keep going until they breathe or help arrives.

It’s smart to learn these steps before an emergency happens. MyCPR Now’s Pet CPR Certification can teach you how to do it right. The course is easy to follow and helps you feel more prepared.
