Everybody starts giving you all sorts of advice once they find out you are welcoming new pedigree into this world. The information can seem especially overwhelming when you are welcoming a new litter of canine.

We all try to keep the house clean with pets, but this can become extraordinarily challenging with a pregnant dog in the house. The first thing everybody wants to know is, how long is the pregnancy going to last?

Detecting Your Dog’s Pregnancy

A dog’s pregnancy lasts up to a total of 63 days, approximately two months. The problem is that you cannot pick up a dog’s pregnancy kit from the market and confirm the status of your dog’s pregnancy. One of the easiest ways to detect a bitch’s pregnancy is that her nipples will become swollen. You can take your dog to the vet to confirm the pregnancy.

Once 25 to 35 days have passed into the pregnancy, your vet will perform an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. The ultrasound can detect individual heartbeats, which can indicate the number of puppies your bitch is expecting. After 28 days of the pregnancy, your veterinarian can palpate your dog to identify the number of puppies.

Stages In a Dog’s Pregnancy?

Once the dog is pregnant, it will not be as active as it once used to be. You will notice that the dog may not be as enthusiastic about going for a walk, as it once was. Instead of spending time playing with toys and chasing Frisbees, the dog will spend more time alone.

There will be excessive vaginal discharge in the first four weeks. Seek out veterinary assistance if there is excessive vaginal bleeding. Sleeping with your dog in the same bed might not be such a good idea. Once the first month of the bitch’s pregnancy has passed, it is an excellent time to start crafting a whelping box. If you do not design a whelping box, the bitch may decide to use one of the empty closets or any other secluded area as her delivery room.

Dispensing Sufficient & Wholesome Nourishment

There is not much which needs to be done in the first half of the pregnancy if the dam (bitch) has an appropriate weight. You must maintain the same diet in terms of the amount of nutrition and timings of the meals.

In the final five weeks of the pregnancy, the dam’s diet and weight should increase. It is important not to substitute smaller meals for more sizable meals. Ensure that your dog gets more nutrition by scheduling frequent meals with the same portion size.

Breed Appropriate Considerations

Pugs, bulldogs, French boxers, and other snub-nosed dog breeds aka brachycephalic can have complications during whelping. The dam has problems performing contractions to expel the baby’s head. In all of these breeds, the dog’s head is larger than the rest of the body.

Puppies also have larger heads in proportion to the rest of their body, there is a tendency for the head to get stuck during the birthing process. Due to this, the bitch could have breathing problems during the whelping process. All of these breeds need to be taken to the veterinarian to perform the birth.

Scheduling Periodic Visits to the Vet

Dogs and bitches are much more physically active than human beings. Once the bitch realizes that she is about to conceive, she will become less physically active. The health of her puppies lies in the paws of her health.

Even so, there will be times when the bitch’s physical activity may cause harm to her young ones. You need to schedule periodic visits to the veterinarian starting from the first ten days. Your veterinarian will guide you, when is the next appointment which you need to make. If you feel that there might be a complication with your dog’s pregnancy, do not hesitate to make an emergency visit.

Whelping & Breastfeeding

Countless research proposal writing services can be written for conducting the perfect delivery. Unfortunately, this is not an easy task. There needs to be perfect coordination between the veterinarian and the bitch giving birth. Any time from the 55th day of her pregnancy to the 65th day of pregnancy, the dam can give birth.

The last few days of the pregnancy, the dog will feel morning sickness almost regularly. Once the dam gives birth, the mother must lick the babies clean. The bitch’s licking activates the breathing process of the babies. The mother will lose her appetite 12 hours ahead of the birth. The total time which is taken to conceive the babies can be anywhere from six to 12 hours.

Postnatal Care for Mother & The Puppies

Besides the brachycephalic dog species mentioned above, some narrow-hipped dog species require a Caesarian. Not performing a c-section can endanger both the mother and the pups. After delivering more than one puppy, the mother can take a break for two to three hours. If she takes a long break after bearing only one puppy, contact your local veterinarian.

The bitch will individually pass the placenta for every puppy. The dam will expel, then chew, and proceed to eat the placenta. If she does not do this, there are chances of her contracting a fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy. The babies come out of their mother, butt-first. This position is the normal position in the dog species.
