It is very common for dogs to suffer from separation anxiety. If your furry friend destroys the house when you are gone, barks a lot or scratches furniture when you are gone, these are all signs that your pooch has separation anxiety. But the good news is that there are ways you can make your canine feel more relaxed and comfortable when you leave home. Here are some tips on how you can do this and go to work without feeling guilty.

Avoid Saying Goodbye

A lot of dog owners tell their dogs that they love them and say goodbye when they are leaving. However, your canine does not understand this. This can end up hyping up their energy and leaving them in a playful mood before you go. Unfortunately, this can make their separation anxiety worse. The best thing you can do is not make a big deal when you leave. Try to ignore your canine before you go out the front door so that they remain calm.

Create a Safe Place

Separation anxiety often means that a dog does not have the confidence to be on their own. In other words, they might not be able to relax and nap when you are not in the house. But one way you can get your pooch to rest is by creating a safe place for them. Dogs love a den and this is something you can create for relaxation. For example, it can include a warm and comfortable bed and a few cozy blankets. This way, your dog can curl up and feel safe. They are going to know this is their spot and you should do your best not to disturb them when they go there by themselves. Offer a Puzzle Toy

A bored dog can become a destructive dog. If you know that you are going to be out of the house for a while, leave your pooch with something fun to do. For instance, there are a lot of toys you can stuff with food. Your dog can work on getting the food out while you are gone, which is going to occupy his or her mind. They will forget that you are gone. Just make sure that the toy is safe and does not require supervision. You can also keep an eye on your pup with a dog camera.

Take Them on a Walk/Run

A build-up of energy can be bad for dogs. If you know you are going to be going out for several hours, walk your furry friend first. This can relieve some of their energy and allow them to nap while you are gone. They say that a tired dog is a good dog. Indeed, they are less likely to get into trouble when they have been sufficiently exercised before you go out. Therefore, make time to ensure that your dog’s needs are met before you leave. Dogs need a minimum of 2 walks per day. One walk around the block and another exploratory walk where you go to a new neighborhood or a new direction. This helps satisfy curiosity and the need to roam and discover as well as get a lay of the land. Don’t be afraid to bring your pup into dog friendly retail spaces such as the Verizon store, local laundromat or neighborhood fire house.
