So you’ve decided to adopt a new pup? Congratulations! As you look around your home, you may have suddenly realized that it’s not puppy-proofed and you need to make changes ASAP!  But don’t panic— dog-proofing doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style or design.

Check for Hidden Dangers

First, check your space for any hidden dangers. Because even the cleanest homes have potential hidden hazards for curious pups. To find them, get down on your hands and knees (from your dog’s point of view) and look for things like:

  • Spare change that may have fallen on the floor
  • Batteries
  • Loose rubber bands or small toys
  • Jewelry or cords
  • Medicine/cleaning supplies

Secure all trash cans and cabinets. In my house, the trash can is locked up in another room with the door closed because my dog refuses to stay out of the garbage. Remove any items (including cleaning supplies) that might attract and harm your curious puppy. Remember, dogs love to scavenger hunt! Store potentially dangerous items in higher or secured lower cabinets. Baby-proof locks are a great option to detour a mischievous puppy.

Invest in a Crate

A crate is a must-have for your new dog. Not only does it provide a safe space for your furry friend to rest and relax, but it’s also helpful for house training. A comfortable crate can feel like a den for your dog, so add cozy blankets, pillows, and toys to make it warm and inviting. Your dog will enjoy spending time in their crate when they feel secure and comfortable.

Give Your Pup a Cozy Bed

There are so many choices when it comes to picking out a dog bed. But it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With all of the options on the market today, you can find a bed that will match your furniture or home decor.  Stylish throws and blankets can also double as a soft, cozy spot for your dog while blending seamlessly with your living space.

Choose Durable Fabrics

When it comes to a new puppy and furniture, durability is key. Choose a couch with dog-friendly materials that are easy to clean. For example, leather and microfiber are great choices as they are both stylish and wipeable.

Stylish Water Solutions

Gone are the days of plain plastic water bowls. These days, you can find stylish water fountains that keep the water moving for your thirsty pup while also adding an elegant touch to your home.

Prevent Scuffs, Bite Marks, and Wall Scratches

As much as we love our dogs, scratches and bite marks are inevitable. But there are  ways to protect your furniture and walls from damage. For your walls, consider using washable, scuff-resistant paint. This will allow you to easily wipe off any scuff marks from your dog’s paws or tail. Or try a magic eraser to easily wipe off scuffs from walls.

You can also use protective furniture wraps or panels to cover furniture legs or corners where your dog may scratch. These pieces can blend in with your existing décor and provide an extra layer of protection from bite marks.

Use Plenty of Rugs

Rugs can protect your floors from scratches and dirt, and they add warmth and color to your space. Choose low-pile, durable rugs, as they are easier to clean and less likely to trap pet hair.

Look for rugs made from natural fibers like wool, which are sturdy and can handle the occasional mishap. If you prefer plush rugs, go for washable options, or choose a style that can be easily vacuumed.  Additionally, rugs with patterns or darker colors are perfect for hiding fur and dirt, making them ideal for high-traffic areas like the living room or hallway.

Stylish Storage Solutions

Dogs come with a lot of STUFF, from leashes and collars to toys, treats, and food bowls. All of that can easily clutter up your home. To keep your dog’s things organized, invest in storage baskets and bins that fit in or match your home’s decor.

With the right materials, storage solutions, and some thoughtful design, you can create a space that’s both dog-friendly and stylish. Before you bring Fido home, check out our list of 7 essentials you must have ready when adopting a dog.
