If you have a dog, considering your pet’s safety is a critical part of your daily life.  While these animals are domesticated, it’s nice to know that they can still enjoy the freedom and adventure of playing outside with the use of wireless fences.

There’s a lot to consider when purchasing a wireless dog fence, but you can rest assured that your pet will be able to play outdoors while giving you the sound peace of mind that your animal will come home unharmed.

If you’re in the market for a wireless dog fence, here a few tips and guidelines that you might consider in purchasing a safe, affordable, and effective solution for your dog’s safety:

When to Use a Wireless Dog Fence

One of the first things to consider when installing a wireless dog fence is the environment and terrain that it will inhabit.  Wireless fences work best in wide open areas, where trees and dense objects can’t interfere with the signal between the fence and dog’s collar.

Maybe you have a pool or lush garden that you also want to protect. The fence will be a great tool to use in keeping your pet away from plants or falling into the pool.  Another factor to consider is the kind of animal that will inhabit the fence.

Dogs with a lower prey instinct will respond much better to the fence and the corrective behaviors associated.  If your dog breed is notorious for hunting and escaping, the dog might require more training in order to learn the fence regulations and stay inside the marked property.

How Does the Wireless Dog Fence Work?

The wireless dog fence system is an easy, affordable, and effective technological tool to secure your animal and ensure safety.  It’s customized to your property, your pet, and can even be easily taken with you for travel.

Simply plug the transmitter somewhere inside your home and it will emit a radio signal around your house.  You can customize the distance and the specified locations that you want to keep your dog inside of.  Next, place the lightweight receiver collar on your dog.

This collar will receive a warning signal every time the animal gets closer to the boundary. Your dog is free to run and play within the inside boundary, and will learn the warning signals as it gets closer to the fence.

If the dog continues to go beyond the signal and the fence, it will receive an energy pulse from the collar which can be startling at first.  With time, the pup will learn from the energy pulse and stay clear of the fence.

Is the Wireless Fence Affordable?

The short answer is yes!  If you’ve ever looked into physical fencing for your property, you’ll learn quickly that materials needed to install and maintain a physical fence are far more expensive than a wireless fence for your pet.

Plus, your pup will have the freedom to run and roam long distanes on some wireless fences, while giving you the sense of security that your animal is safe.

Wireless Fences are Effective

Sometimes, physical fences don’t contain animals that can climb and jump.  In these cases, the wireless fence has proven to be a more effective tool for safety and enjoyment of the animal.

Dogs are very fast learners and often quickly respond to the warning signals of the fence and any subsequent correction to protect them and contain them.  No longer will you have to worry about your pup digging a hole in the dirt and escaping, or hopping over the fence and getting loose.

Another factor to consider is human error.  All too often we forget to close a physical fence or back door, making it very easy for a puppy to escape and get loose.  Wireless fences make containing your puppy a virtually foolproof system.

Drawbacks to the Wireless Dog Fence

While the wireless dog fence is an affordable and effective tool to keeping your animal safe and secure, it’s always important to consider the potential cons of using the wireless fence.

First, in order for the wireless fence to work effectively, there is training required.  Your pup will need to practice by wearing the collar, playing outside, and learning the area in which it is free to play.

Another factor to consider is external animals and prey.  While the wireless fence does a good job of containing your pup, it doesn’t consider other wild animals and neighborhood pets from entering the property.

In this case, any fighting that might occur would be the result of an intruding animal.  Conversely, your pet could get agitated by seeing animals roam freely outside the fenced area.  This kind of “teasing” can be bothersome to dogs and owners alike.

Your pet will hopefully learn from the signals of the collar that it must stay inside the wireless fenced area.  However, if the pup doesn’t learn, the animal will receive an energy signal which can generate a correction signal to the animal.  If the wireless apparatus is set up properly, the correction shouldn’t be painful.

Reliability is another factor to consider.  Let’s say there’s a power outage and the fence is not working.  The animal will not receive the warning signal or the energy signal to remain inside the fenced area.

In the event your animal escapes beyond the fenced boundary, it will need to make the decision to cross back over the fence and endure another correction. This likelihood of inflicting pain on one’s animal is often a deterrent for pet owners.  We want to keep our animals safe but we don’t want to hurt them.

Like all decisions regarding your pup, you will be required to do research and make decisions that best fit the needs of you, your lifestyle, your budget, and of course your pet.  Do the research and the decisions will be easy.
