Collar versus Front-Lead Harness

By August 13, 2011March 26th, 2015No Comments

At New York Dog Nanny we require that all of our dogs are walked using a harness or front-lead harness? It’s not uncommon for a dog to slip out of its leash in a flash of fear, excitement or even an oversight on securing the collar. Since we are committed to ensuring your dog is safe while in our care, we have made it a policy to have all dogs have a harness while we walk them. A particularly great harness is the front-lead harness. Equally important is to get the assistance of a pet-store employee to help you purchase the proper size. Nothing is worse than an ill-fitting harness. One that is too large poses the problem of dogs backing out of them and escaping. Contrarily, one that is too tight may chaff the dogs skin.

Lastly another consideration is the fabric which the harness is made out. NYDN recommends on that is comfortable to your hand that we ourselves would feel comfortable against our own skin. If the edges are rough to the touch, consider how this friction is going to affect your pooches comfort wearing the harness and all the time you may spend trying to chase him/her around your home trying to put it on your pup. If your dog is doing this, chances are 1) either he/she needs more play time/attention or 2) if its harness related, it could be due to discomfort. Nevertheless, one solid harness is the one below:

The Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness from Premier will instantly, painlessly and effectively make leash walking more pleasant and safer for you and your dog!

The Easy Walk Harness prevents your dog from pulling on the leash: This no-pull harness works because the leash connection ring is ingeniously located on the center of the chest strap. When your dog pulls on the leash, he will be guided back towards you, which will gently discourage him from pulling on the leash. (For Extreme Pullers, or Aggressive Dogs, You May Prefer the Gentle Leader Head Halter.)

The Easy Walk Protects your dog’s neck: Attaching the leash at the chest also prevents pressure over your dog’s throat and neck, which is especially important for toy breeds that can be susceptible to tracheal damage.

Pet Expertise helpful hint on preventing chaffing: Short-haired dogs can be susceptible to chaffing when wearing a harness. To prevent this, make sure that you use the Easy Walk Harness as instructed and be careful to fit the harness so that the girth strap does not lie in the dog’s “armpits”. The Pet Expertise exclusive Strap Wrap fleece harness and collar padding is a perfect companion to the harness that can maximize comfort and help prevent chaffing.
